Abstract: The dynamics of the shut-off rod drop in a Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) is presented. A theoretical model of the shut-off rod is outlined. The model is experimentally investigated by using a full scale prototype of the shut-off rod assembly. An empirical formula for the friction factor of the dashpot used in the prototype assembly is developed.
