Abstract: T. Fukuhara, I. Sakamoto, and H. Sato [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 3, 8917 (1991)] reported valence fluctuations of Sm ions in SmRuSn3, which orders antiferromagnetically at 6 K. We have carried out x-ray, microprobe, heat-capacity, susceptibility, and resistivity measurements on a sample of nearly the same stoichiometry. There are two inequivalent Sm sites in SmRuSn3 and from the analysis of our data we conclude that Sm ions at one site are in the trivalent state and those at the second site are either divalent or weakly valence fluctuating.
