| Abstract: | The interaction between an initially planar shock wave and a strong vortex is numerically simulated in a relatively large computational domain for long simulation times. A numerical scheme of very-high-order spatial accuracy is used. Multiple acoustic waves, quadrupolar in nature and successively out of phase, are captured in the numerical simulations. The number of acoustic waves captured are more than the maximum of three previously reported in literature in the interaction of an initially planar shock wave with a compressible vortex. The additional sound waves observed are due to acoustic radiation from the rotating elliptical vortex following the interaction of the incident shock wave and the initially circular vortex. |
