Abstract: An examination is presented of the adequacy of the frequently used incoherent scattering function S(x,Z) for an explanation of available semiconductor detector results concerning atomic Compton-scattering cross sections at small momentum transfer. The conclusion is that the underlying simple theoretical treatment of electron-binding effects has not been accurately tested so far on account of insufficient energy resolution of the reported experiments.
